Four New Makeup Looks for Fall
by Stacy Carto

4 Make-up looks for fallOut of all the seasons, none but autumn displays such a glorious array of warm colors. And this season's new makeup shades - bold reds, passionate plums, gold, black and burgundy - illuminate nature with hues and textures that jump from the earth. Whether it is smoky eyes, lush lips, precious metals or deep purple, this fall there are plenty of fashion-forward makeup choices.

Smoke Signals

A smoky look doesn't have to be a frightening one. The aim is sophistication that smolders with lightness of touch, allowing this look to work for both day and night. Follow three basic steps:

1. Gently line the upper and lower lash line with a soft, dark pencil, staying as close as possible to the eyelashes.
2. Soften the line by smudging it with a sponge tip applicator, a flat-tip brush or your pinky finger.
3. Using a standard-size fluff brush, apply a medium to dark shadow across the lid, up into and slightly above the crease, using soft back and forth strokes (Think sunset; the color is darker at the horizon, gradually growing lighter as it moves upward). Apply the same color under the eye to give a smudged effect. To soften edges, use a cream-colored shadow to blend. Finish with black mascara on top and bottom lashes.

Tip: With eyes being strong, keep lips simple. Choose a light, neutral shade with a touch of gloss for a finished, yet relaxed, look.

Color Rich

Luxurious. Lips take on this effect when draped with depth -- try deep wine, velvety crimson, or bronzed brick.

Whatever the color selection, let the lips lead and the rest of the makeup follow. Balance the look with a soft, neutral shadow on the eyes. Choose one with shimmer to make the eyes pop.

Tip: When applying dark lip color, use a lip brush for preciseness and ease.

A Natural Glow

If you've ever been shy about wearing makeup that glistens, fear not! With sheens such as mother of pearl, metallic makeup this season is subtle, not shiny.

To put emphasis on the eyes, sweep a shimmery beige or gold shadow over the entire lid. Using a flat tip brush, define eyes by applying a darker shadow along upper lash line. Finish with black mascara.

Tip: Bring the look onto the lips with a gloss - clear or colored. Also, for a fun change, use the same beige or gold shadow on the bottom lash line for light definition that naturally highlights!

The Color Purple

Mention this color and thoughts of grape juice or gaudiness might come to mind. But with so many extensions on the color wheel, violet is taking on a whole new look, especially on the face. Whether you choose soft lavender, intense lilac or deep burgundy, there is a shade for everyone - it's surprisingly versatile!

And don't be afraid to mix shades. This will give a more balanced appearance than having the same shade over the entire face. Still not convinced? Start out with a touch of color (such as on the eyelid) and work your way up as you become more confident.

Tip: Go easy on the blush to avoid overdoing it.
